Did you see the movie The Truman Show? The character played by Jim Carrey was in a reality TV show, only he didn’t know it. From the time of his birth, all through to his adulthood, millions of viewers had watched his daily life.
As we watch the movie, we get to see both what these fictional viewers are seeing, but also what’s going on behind the scenes as well. There’s one scene where he looks into a mirror and talks to himself. It’s a cringe moment – a private moment for him, but we feel the invasion into his life because we know what he doesn’t know – that it’s a public moment and he’s being watched by millions.
Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror and talked to yourself? Looked yourself straight in the eye and told your mirror-self things to be heard by your own ears only? After all, you’re the only one who knows exactly what’s going on in your head. You know your fears, your hopes, your weaknesses, your strengths, your prejudices, your vulnerabilities.
